Let’s clear it up:
All industries can benefit from sustainable design.
Outsourcing to companies who have unfair treatment of workers, have environmentally-irresponsible manufacturing, or conflict resources (natural resources that fund armed violence), cannot be maintained reasonably long-term so it is not sustainable.
Another meaning for sustainable design involves maintenance of the current systems in place.
Creating self-promotional material that has additional uses apart from its original value is also considered sustainable design.
Practices and items that are ecologically friendly do not cause harm to our environment or planet Earth; it described as being eco-friendly.
Using sustainable design is an eco-friendly practice, which is why it seems like these terms bleed over into each other for meaning.
But eco-friendly is a term mainly used to describe practices that are friendly to the environment.
Individual actions that can be described as eco-friendly are: recycling, carpooling, shopping local, avoiding plastic, going paperless, using organic cleaning products.
Goods that are sourced or manufactured conscientiously can be labeled as organic. This term is usually used to describe food, but it can also describe paper goods and other natural products.
By definition, to be organic is to be alive. Businesses use this term to describe goods that are completely natural, and have no toxic or synthetic substances added.
For example, using organic paper products that are responsibly sourced or recycled can make sustainability easy for the business owner who wants to keep excessive waste away from our landfills.
Sustainable design has a creative secondary use.
Sustainable Design can use sustainably-sourced goods for common marketing materials like business cards, packaging, and mailers.
Making a design more sustainable also means lengthening its lifespan, and extending the amount of time before it inevitably gets dumped into global landfills to rot.
Like putting your branding on something useful that will continue being used long after its original purpose.
By using recycled paper, your self-promo is eco-friendly. By making that self-promo double as a calendar, now it is considered a sustainable design.
You don’t necessarily need an “environmental brand” in order to have sustainable design!
It is the act of making your promotional goods useful for more than its promotional value.
You may also order a package including banners, apparel, and more.
